ABOUT: Some, well, acutally most, of this will not make sense to anyone who isn't from the area. It was an English assignment for senior year, where we had to just write about a bunch of things that we remembered from being kids. So this is my collection of the less depressing and life-scarring events of my childhood. Click here to read more poems.
I Remember
I remember the smell of cookies filling Gramma’s kitchen
And the little round tins she held them in.
I remember catching snakes and mice in the backyard
And keeping them in a fish tank.
I remember my many stupid accidents,
Like riding my bike into a tree branch and clothes-lining myself.
I remember playing football and soccer with the boys
Because I was the only girl around.
I remember my mother’s many houses,
Like the one next to the (M)otel in Mattapoisett.
I remember spending Christmas Eve with everyone
And the living room being piled high with gifts.
I remember the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,
And owning every bit of merchandise they put out.
I remember Hurricane Bob, and the tree that fell in our front yard
Leaving us without power for days.
I remember finding a clarinet in my closet,
And teaching myself how to play.
I remember the Teddy Bear Olympics, Mrs. Hague’s bad breath,
And always being too early or too late.
I remember fighting with my same friend almost every day,
Only to make up later on and fight again.
I remember Sherman the Sheep,
The stuffed animal that’s been through everything and then some.
I remember playing wall ball and four square,
But I don’t remember the rules to either game.
I remember playing “manhunt”
And being left alone in my basement in the dark.
I remember being in the sixth grade chorus show
With Kevin, Sean, Leann, and Spencer.
I remember spending hours in the sand box or on the swings
With nothing else to do or worry about.
I remember being a child, and being innocent
And how much easier life was back then.
